Durant la seconde moitié du xvii e siècle, l’imaginaire qui sous-tend l’exploration du continent nord-américain est encore imprégné des récits de merveilles qui circulaient en Europe depuis Marco Polo. Les exactions espagnoles du siècle précédent en Amérique du Sud et au Mexique faisaient également miroiter, en filigrane, l’espoir de richesses fabuleuses auxquelles on espérait parvenir, au-delà du bassin laurentien, dès que l’on aurait découvert le passage devant y mener. Mais peu à peu, à mesure que les cartes se précisent, les voies du nord et du sud se ferment au désir. Reste la voie de l’ouest : les documents entourant l’exploration du bassin du Mississipi et, en particulier, les relations d’Hennepin révèlent qu’à la fin du xvii e siècle, l’idée de passage cède le pas à celle d’empire. Tenaces, les désirs de richesse et de puissance finiront pas s’ancrer en sol américain. La Salle n’aura pas cherché en vain sa Chine rêvée : un empire finira par surgir de ses explorations mêmes !
