Une des étapes nécessaires à l'estimation de l'espérance de vie sans perte d'autonomie à l'aide du modèle multi-êtats est le calcul de valeurs fiables pour les taux de mortalité par âge, pour chacun des états. Cet exposé décrit la méthode utilisée pour obtenir des estimations de la mortalité par âge et par état de santé à partir des résultats de l'enquête américaine Longitudinal Study of Aging de 1986. Les résultats obtenus révèlent dejortes différences au niveau des taux de mortalité selon l'état de santé. En fonction de l'autonomie ou de la perte d'autonomie, l'espérance de vie présente des écarts qui sont du même ordre que la mortalité différentielle selon le sexe.
