Abstract
Un échantillon patronymique est stratifié pour faciliter la comparaison des comportements démographiques de trois communautés culturelles : canadienne-française, anglo-protestante et irlando-catholique. Malgré leur voisinage étroit à l'intérieur d'une même ville, les trois communautés n'avaient pas le même calendrier de mariage. Les tables de mortalité créées pour les années 1860 et 1890 révèlent une importante réduction de l'intensité du mariage et en montrent l'impact sur les taux nets de reproduction. Dans chaque communauté, l'évolution de la distribution des âges au mariage semble offrir un premier signe d'une « transition démographique ».
