Cet article traite de la présence de discours sur les objets d’art (principalement le décor peint et le décor sculpté de l’église) dans les monographies paroissiales publiées entre 1854 et 1926. De prime abord, il explore la manière dont les auteurs articulent les sources qui fondent l’histoire de la paroisse, c’est-à-dire comment les auteurs – des prêtres historiens pour la plupart – accordent le document d’archives, le souvenir des anciens et les observations qui leur sont propres afin d’écrire le récit historique. Ce texte explique ensuite comment l’approche particulière des auteurs en ce qui concerne ces sources crée une énonciation à plusieurs temporalités où l’objet d’art cristallise le rapport de la communauté à son histoire. Ce rapport, que met en évidence le discours sur le tableau d’un maître-autel ou sur l’avènement de nouvelles formes architecturales, relève peut-être d’un projet où le discours sur les oeuvres d’art serait essentiel : la transmission, au moyen de l’écriture, d’un legs culturel.
