Le présent document porte sur la mesure dans laquelle la croissance de la productivité est attribuable au roulement des entreprises au fur et à mesure que la production est déplacée d'une entreprise à une autre du fait du processus concurrentiel. Le roulement a lieu lorsque certaines entreprises augmentent leur part de marché tandis que d'autres voient diminuer la leur. Une partie de ce roulement est le résultat des entrées et sorties d'entreprises. L'autre est due à l'expansion et au déclin des entreprises existantes qui demeurent en activité. Dans le présent document, nous proposons une méthode permettant de mesurer l'effet du roulement des entreprises sur la croissance de la productivité et nous montrons que cet effet est beaucoup plus important que ne l'indiquent les auteurs de nombreuses études empiriques antérieures. Nous soutenons que la concurrence est la principale source de croissance agrégée de la productivité du travail dans les industries manufacturières canadiennes.
