Abstract
La communauté italo-québécoise que l'on connaît aujourd'hui est issue en grande partie d'un processus migratoire massif qui a eu cours au lendemain du deuxième conflit mondial. Les origines socio-économiques faibles de ce groupe ethnique l'on amené à favoriser la langue anglaise comme véhicule de promotion sociale et à résister farouchement à l'imposition du français comme langue d'enseignement. Le conflit linguistique au Québec ainsi que les oppositions entre anglophones et francophones ont aidé à préserver des "espaces ethniques" et à promouvoir l'italianité. Mais plus encore, la résistance à la francisation a provoqué l'émergence d'un mouvement social populaire sans précédent, qui a accéléré le processus de restructuration et de modernisation du pouvoir à l'intérieur de la communauté sous l'hégémonie d'un nouveau leadership étroitement associé à une bourgeoisie ethnique montante.
