Au cours des dernières années, on s'est beaucoup intéressé sur la scène internationale aux indicateurs clés. Le présent document se veut un tour d'horizon des efforts déployés récemment au Canada en vue d'élaborer des indicateurs clés du bien être économique, social, environnemental et physique. Y sont classifiés et examinés en détail plus de 40 projets et publications portant sur ce sujet. Y figurent aussi l'énumération brève de 20 autres projets, ainsi que des renvois à plusieurs enquêtes actuelles et bibliographies annotées donnant des exemples supplémentaires de développement d'indicateurs au Canada. Le document comprend des renseignements sur plusieurs centres de recherche qui consacrent leurs travaux à l'élaboration d'indicateurs et il aborde les indicateurs internationaux qui sont pertinents sur la scène canadienne, parce qu'ils représentent des « prototypes » d'un genre particulier de mesures ou qu'ils pourraient être considérés comme une « pratique exemplaire » dans un domaine particulier. Le document s'attache aussi aux motifs qui sous tendent le développement d'indicateurs et à la question de savoir si les efforts en vue d'étendre la mesure au delà du domaine économique ne reviennent pas à vouloir « mesurer l'immesurable ».
