Abstract
Umweltforschung untersucht einerseits die Folgen von Umwelteingriffen, und andererseits sollen die Forschungsresultate als Grundlage für Maßnahmen und Verhaltensänderungen dienen. Das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen den beiden Aufgaben der Umweltforschung, (1) innovative Forschungsresultate zu produzieren und (2) zur Lösung konkreter Umweltprobleme beizutragen, manifestiert sich im “Datendilemma”: Einerseits ist der Bestand an verfügbaren Forschungsresultaten so umfangreich und heterogen geworden, dass sich unterschiedliche und zum Teil auch widersprüchliche Schlussfolgerungen daraus ziehen lassen, und andererseits ist in vielen Fällen immer noch keine ausreichende wissenschaftliche Grundlage für die Entwicklung und Bewertung von Handlungsalternativen verfügbar (Handlungsbezug). Die Resultate, die die Umweltforschung heute produziert, “passen” oftmals nicht wirklich zum Wissensbedarf der Entscheidungsträger. Die Umweltforschung unterscheidet sich von der klassischen naturwissenschaftlichen Forschung in wesentlichen Punkten: Für sie ist es neben der Orientierung an wissenschaftlichen Standards wichtig, die eigene wissenschaftliche Position im gesellschaftlichen Umfeld zu reflektieren (“reflexive Umweltforschung”).
