À en croire la critique pédagogique, la culture scolaire s’organiserait et se transmettrait trop souvent dans l’ordre des propositions. Elle ignorerait les questions qui sont pourtant la condition et l’ambition d’un rapport non dogmatique au savoir. Un détour par la logique et la sociologie des interactions langagières montrera pourtant que le « pouvoir de la question » n’est pas sans ambivalence, et qu’il est toujours en tension entre deux figures symétriques : la curiosité et la critique. Il montrera aussi que ni l’ordre des propositions, ni l’ordre des questions ne peuvent prétendre à l’hégémonie, et que le ressort de toute discussion est précisément la lutte pour la validité des rapports de subordination. On conclura qu’une école qui voudrait assumer à la fois la symétrie des arguments et l’asymétrie du rapport maître-élèves doit instituer - c’est-à-dire permettre et en même temps limiter - une double controverse : le litige (quant aux réponses) et le différend (quant aux questions). Ce que la recherche peut apporter à un tel projet, c’est moins la définition des fins souhaitables que l’analyse des pratiques observables. Étudier, non pas ce qu’il serait « bon de faire », mais ce que nous faisons « pour de bon ». Ici comme ailleurs, la discussion porte (aussi) sur le bien-fondé de la question.
