Dès lors qu’on appréhende l’appareil de prise de vues comme simple dispositif de filmage (au sens d’enregistrement), tout document filmé se voit doté d’une valeur d’archives. Il conviendrait cependant de distinguer le filmage (qui est un procédé) du tournage (qui est une procédure). Le filmage se soumet au principe d’une réalité à capter, alors que le tournage autoriserait un opérateur-sujet à initier un processus de sublimation de l’image enregistrée. Un détour par la présentation d’opéras filmés dans les salles de cinéma permet d’examiner les modalités de diffusion de ce type de prestation scénique pour laquelle des metteurs en images « virtuoses et agités » superposent au discours de la mise en scène spécifiquement opératique une nouvelle couche de sens. Un peu à l’image de la sublimation du filmage à laquelle la procédure du tournage cinématographique donne lieu, en transfigurant et en transcendant le matériel capté, par l’ajout d’une nouvelle couche d’« interprétation plastique » (Canudo). D’où la proposition de distinguer archivage de reproduction et archivage d’expression. Le premier est basé sur les seules capacités enregistreuses du film. Le second transcende ces capacités, de la part d’un média qui développe alors une expressivité qui lui est propre. Si l’effet-archives est en quelque sorte « embarqué » dans le dispositif de reproduction qu’est l’appareil de prise de vues, l’expression nécessite au contraire une volonté exogène de négocier avec les virtualités expressives d’un média.
