Abstract
This paper is concentrating on the varied aspects of returning from exile which Iain Crichton Smith investigated, from migrants coming back from Canada to soldiers returning from wars, or from workers retiring from the Lowlands to their Gaelic-speaking native islands and glens to young men and women who, after being educated out of their villages, realise, before or when returning, they can no longer adapt because times have changed—to them all, returning from exile is yet another exile.By means of the aporia of “The Departing Island” Iain Crichton Smith relishes on reversing common perceptions of reality. His study on exile and return from exile first of all sets the major issue of the loss of the native language. If all reasons for exile can be summed up in the call of the sea, those for the return from exile are best epitomised in the title of the prose poem, “You are at the bottom of my mind”. Finally, Crichton Smith’s answer to the aporia of the departing island is his own return ad patres, as developed in his last collection of poems, The Leaf and the Marble.
