Abstract
Tant et aussi longtemps qu'on ne définira pas les règles à suivre pour respecter les besoins et les désirs du patient, «mourir avec dignité» ne sera rien de plus qu'un slogan. Toute tentative pour établir un mécanisme destiné à faciliter la prise de décision en fait ressortir les nombreux problèmes. Quand devons-nous cesser nos efforts pour prolonger une vie? Quand devons-nous continuer le traitement? Sur quelle base morale devons-nous prendre ces décisions? Qui a la responsabilité de prendre cette décision? Ces décisions doivent-elles être partagées? S'il est moralement justifiable de laisser un patient mourir, pourquoi n'est-il pas moralement justifiable de hâter sa mort? Toutes ces questions, et bien d'autres qui leur sont connexes, présentent un défi pour notre société et les professionnels de la santé. Nous devrons donc en venir à un consensus, si nous voulons résoudre les graves dilemmes moraux dans la médecine d'aujourd'hui.
