Résumé Au Portugal, de nouvelles juridictions de proximité ont été créées en 2001. Installées initialement dans quatre localités, elles existent aujourd’hui dans quinze localités et la généralisation du dispositif est à l’étude. L’article rappelle les antécédents de cette réforme et le processus politique qui a conduit à son approbation. Il rend compte d’un travail de suivi sociologique mené durant les six premiers mois de fonctionnement de l’institution, incluant des enquêtes auprès des professionnels engagés dans l’institution et des usagers. Il esquisse une première appréciation des changements que représente cette réforme pour la culture judiciaire portugaise et pour l’image de la justice.
