Abstract
Building upon its unique theological heritage from founder Albert B. Simpson, the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada has seen significant growth in its twenty-five year history. But the strong missional emphasis of the Denomination has sometimes appeared to eclipse larger pastoral concerns that ultimately affect the strength of its ministry. Though not unique to this Denomination, this pragmatic approach to church ministry has sometimes negatively impacted pastors, their spouses and families, as well as the churches they serve. Though the problem remains largely undocumented, it is evident that there are instances of serious pastoral crisis, bum-out, and ministry drop-out. These difficulties of pastoral ministry are especially obvious in cases of negative transition. While the study recognizes the positive nature of many pastoral transitions for pastors and churches of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada it attempts to document the degree to which negative transition occurs. The study tries to determine whether a better system of pastoral care for pastors and their spouses might minimize instances of negative transition and related pastoral problems. It seeks to demonstrate that a strong philosophy of pastoral care for pastors and their spouses is biblically and theologically sound. Not only can on-going pastoral care for pastoral families bring greater honor to Christ; it can also serve to strengthen the ministry of churches, and ultimately make the Denomination's mission more effective. The theological framework in this study consists o f a survey o f relevant biblical themes and passages that support the significance of pastoral leadership and care. The literature review considers the issue of pastoral care under eight headings related to the matter of transition. The field work surveys a representation of solo and senior pastors within the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada, its District Superintendents, as well as some leaders of other denominations in Canada concerning pastoral care and transition for pastors. The results of the surveys are documented and summary conclusions are noted. Based on the theological and literary research, as well as the survey fieldwork, the project concludes with ten recommendations regarding pastoral care for pastors and their families.
