El contexto de globalizacion e internacionalizacion aceleradas, experimentado particularmente desde hace dos decadas, ha puesto en la palestra de los estudios sobre la universidad la necesidad de dar explicacion al tipo de causas y condicionantes que estan incidiendo hoy dia, directa e indirectamente, en la conformacion, debilitamiento o reforzamiento de la identidad institucional universitaria, fenomeno al que se hace referencia continuamente pero cuyo estudio presenta limites dado su escaso grado de desarrollo como campo de analisis. Tomando como marco de reflexion el caso de la internacionalizacion de las actividades de la UNAM, asi como la atencion que la misma puede brindar desde su cultura organizacional a las demandas sociales, en este articulo presentamos de forma sintetica una propuesta teorico-conceptual y metodologica, fundada en la perspectiva del nuevo neoinstitucionalismo, que puede servir de base para el estudio de la identidad institucional universitaria
