Abstract
Abstract Mary Ainsworth received a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (1939) from the University of Toronto. She was appointed Assistant Professor at University of Toronto (1946), Professor at Johns Hopkins University (1963), Commonwealth Professor at University of Virginia (1975), and was an Emeritus Professor after 1984. Ainsworth devoted a lifetime of research to the study of infant‐mother relationships. She introduced a 20‐minute, controlled laboratory technique called the “strange situation,” which provides a widely used measure of child‐mother attachment.
