Georges Sadoul, connu pour ses ouvrages fondamentaux d’histoire du cinéma et ses écrits en tant que journaliste, exerçait également des activités d’enseignement. Il collabora entre autres à l’Institut de filmologie pendant plus de dix années. Néanmoins, parmi ses archives personnelles conservées par la Cinémathèque française, seule la retranscription d’une conférence est signalée comme correspondant à une leçon donnée à l’Institut de filmologie. Ainsi, malgré la ténuité des traces, le présent article s’efforce de restituer ce que pouvait être l’enseignement de Georges Sadoul. Dans un premier temps, le parcours de l’historien est brièvement rappelé car il contribue à éclairer ou à expliquer les raisons qui ont conduit à sa collaboration avec l’Institut, puis l’étude du document mentionné plus haut, associé à d’autres textes comparables, permet de retracer les tenants pédagogiques et historiographiques spécifiques à son enseignement en filmologie.
