Abstract
L'anglais et le français sont utilisés au Canada depuis 1760 dans les domaines parlementaire, judiciaire et scolaire. En 1867, ce bilinguisme était reconnu pour l'État canadien, le Québec et une partie de l'ouest du pays. Vite abandonnée dans l'ouest, la dualité linguistique y a été rétablie quelque quatre-vingts ans plus tard par le Parlement canadien dans le cadre d'une réforme constitutionnelle toujours en cours. Elle s'est alors étendue au Nouveau-Brunswick et à l'Ontario, mais face à un Québec qui optait pour sa francisation et adoptait des lois à cette fin. Ces changements sont examinés par rapport à l'évolution des statuts des communautés de langues officielles et de leurs objectifs.
