Abstract
Dans son Manifeste du roman populiste, Léon Lemonnier a établi une théorie plutôt vague de ce que devait être un roman populiste. Plus clair apparaissait cependant ce qui devait à tout prix être absent de ce type de littérature. Au nombre des éléments à éviter, le moralisme et le romanesque arrivent en tête de liste. Ainsi, il est passablement étonnant de retrouver dans les romans de Lemonnier non seulement une instance moralisatrice, mais aussi des intrigues plutôt traditionnelles dans un style qui rappelle celui du roman psychologique tant exécré des populistes. Cela, combiné à la notion très vague de « peuple » de Lemonnier, rend problématique la place de ce dernier parmi les populistes et la définition du roman populiste.
