Abstract
A conformação da curva de pressão arterial varia bastante a partir das artérias de maior diâmetro para as artérias de menor diâmetro, em virtude das diferenças estruturais e propriedades funcionais da parede dos vasos ao longo do sistema arterial.A maioria dos estudos epidemiológicos e genéticos sobre hipertensão baseouse na simples determinação de dois pontos da curva de pressão arterial, as pressões sistólica e diastólica, sem levar em consideração o diferente perfi l da curva da pressão ao longo da árvore arterial.Recentemente, uma análise não-invasiva da onda de pulso identifi cou a medida da rigidez arterial como um fator independente de risco cardiovascular em hipertensos.Os diferentes determinantes da rigidez arterial parecem ter bases genéticas.Os futuros estudos sobre genética da hipertensão deverão levar em consideração o perfi l da pressão arterial e seus principais determinantes.
