Abstract
L’intérêt pour le travail de Karl Polanyi s’est renforcé avec l’avènement de la globalisation néo-libérale, et il peut encore s’accentuer étant donné la catastrophe engendrée par celle-ci. En 1944, l’ouvrage « La Grande Transformation » expliquait les difficultés rencontrées par le capitalisme entre les deux guerres. Elles résultaient en particulier de la tendance à instaurer un marché auto-régulateur depuis le 19ème siècle. La société a réagi à cette tendance pour s’y opposer. Polanyi attendait donc une réarticulation de l’économie et de la société à travers la planification sociale, mais il n’avait pas anticipé la relance de l’économie de marché sous le leadership américain. Il s’est ensuite consacré à l’économie pré-industrielle, à la fois formelle et substantive. Plus tard, son concept d’encastrement a été central dans l’émergence d’une nouvelle sociologie économique. Aujourd’hui, son analyse du capitalisme financier avant la première guerre mondiale et le désastre de l’entre deux guerres est d’une pertinence particulière.
