RésuméSur le marché de Sa Pa, dans le Nord-Vietnam, depuis un siècle, les produits agricoles et forestiers apportés des hameaux isolés sont vendus ou échangés par les Montagnards à des Kinh contre des produits de première nécessité et des biens usuels. Récemment, toutefois, la situation s’est complexifiée en raison d’une mainmise de l’État socialiste sur l’économie suivie d’une forte croissance de l’activité touristique dans la région, deux facteurs qui ont contribué à stimuler le commerce et à modifier la forme de la place du marché local. Au travers d’une ethnographie des pratiques commerçantes observées à Sa Pa, les auteurs montrent qu’en dépit des tumultes politiques du xxe siècle, le marché est toujours conçu et fréquenté par la majorité des montagnards de la région sur le mode coutumier, c’est-à-dire qu’on le visite d’abord pour des motifs culturels et sociaux, et ensuite seulement pour des motifs économiques.
