Abstract
Après avoir parcouru les régions acadiennes des provinces Maritimes en 1946-1947 afin de réaliser une thèse doctorale sur les parlers français d’Acadie, Geneviève Massignon y est revenue en 1961, attirée cette fois-ci par les conteurs et chanteurs traditionnels qu’elle avait découverts. Florent Gervais, conteur vivant dans le Madawaska américain, avait particulièrement attiré son intérêt. Massignon a présenté des contes du Madawaska lors du congrès de l’Isfnr à Athènes en 1964, mais elle est décédée deux ans plus tard et son grand projet d’édition de contes n’a jamais été réalisé. Massignon considérait que les contes du Madawaska méritaient d’être connus à travers le monde, mais son travail est tombé dans l’oubli. L’auteur s’interroge donc sur les tendances qu’ont les chercheurs de développer sans cesse de nouveaux chantiers de recherche, alors que des travaux importants demeurés inachevés mériteraient d’être repris. Selon lui, les contes traditionnels demeurent un domaine d’étude pertinent à l’heure où la pratique du contage connaît partout un renouveau.
