Abstract
Dans cet article, l’auteur examine l’esthétique des sphères parallèles présente dans les romans du cycle de la ville-île de Pierre Yergeau et, afin d’en décrire les principales composantes, il commence par s’arrêter sur le roman intitulé 1999. L’attention se porte sur le personnage de Charles Hoffen, témoin par excellence de la logique de l’interruption sous-jacente à cette esthétique. L’hypothèse soutenue est qu’un récit brisé ne peut que mettre en scène des personnages détraqués, et que Charles en est l’exemple par excellence. Cette perspective s’élargit ensuite pour montrer, dans un premier temps, le système de communication implicite qui réunit les divers textes du cycle de la ville-île. Dans un deuxième et dernier temps, l’auteur étudie les relations entre ce cycle et l’un de ses hypotextes, le poème moderniste de T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land. On verra que la terre dévastée n’est pas qu’un thème chez Yergeau, mais un intertexte aux ramifications étonnantes.
