Comment expliquer la longue période de latence de près de soixante ans qui sépare la rédaction des Mémoires de Pierre de Sales Laterrière (1812-1815) de leur publication posthume (1873) ? Ce délai n’est pas seulement dû à des questions techniques (transmission tardive du manuscrit après la mort de l’auteur, intervention de l’abbé Casgrain, longueur du travail d’édition, etc.). Il s’explique aussi par l’horizon d’attente du public lecteur dans une société encore ébranlée par les événements politiques des années 1830-1840 et où la littérature peine à s’émanciper de l’Histoire. Un phénomène éditorial doit aussi être pris en considération pour bien comprendre l’émergence des Mémoires comme genre littéraire : les nombreuses publications de la Société littéraire et historique de Québec, depuis sa fondation, en 1824. En collectionnant, en conservant et en (ré)éditant régulièrement des mémoires historiques canadiens, cette société bilingue n’a pu que contribuer à l’essor des Mémoires en créant chez le lettré canadien une attente qui rendait possible la publication tant des Mémoires d’Aubert de Gaspé que de ceux de Sales Laterrière.
