Abstract
Cette étude s’interroge sur les liens entre le genre familier, tel que défini par Érasme dans son De conscribendis epistolis , et le sermo , ou mode conversationnel, tel qu’illustré par Stefano Guazzo dans La civil conversazione . L’un et l’autre préconisent en effet, dans un contexte d’élocution qui n’est pas celui de la polémique, le recours à l’échange informel et au style « éthique », de manière à rendre manifeste par l’expression le caractère du locuteur, dans un souci de naturel et de transparence apparemment nouveau ou, du moins, en rupture avec l’ ethos conventionnel de l’orateur. L’auteur suggère que l’accession du genre familier au statut de registre à la Renaissance ouvre un espace pour la conceptualisation du style conversationnel, dans la mesure où celui-ci est indissociable de la lettre familière, envisagée comme une conversation par écrit, et inaugure un nouvel ordre sociodiscursif qui autorise une expression de plus en plus individualisée.
