Avec la problematique du developpement durable qui jusqu'a tout recemment etait inexistante, il devient urgent de revoir les pratiques et facons de faire en transport fluvial. Une de ces pratiques, qui au fil des ans a ete mise de cote, consiste a ajuster la vitesse des navires afin de profiter des courants de maree. Dans ce contexte et en tenant compte de tous les facteurs impliques, nous avons fait l’exercice de revoir cette pratique. Tout d’abord une collecte de donnees sur les temps de transit de voyages effectues dans le secteur des Escoumins a Trois-Rivieres fut completee. Par la suite, l’effet des courants maree sur la progression des navires a ete modelise pour verifier la rentabilite de l’utilisation des ondes de marees par des navires marchands. Les resultats positifs de cette analyse ont permis le developpement d’un logiciel d’aide a la decision permettant, en fonction de tous les intrants, d’optimiser le transit des navires sur le Saint-Laurent et de reduire les emissions atmospheriques de ces derniers.
