En raison de sa position stratégique, mais aussi de sa valeur symbolique (Québec métaphore du Québec), la Vieille Capitale figure comme LA ville en état de siège, de l’époque de Champlain à nos jours. C’est ce curieux destin de cible et de victime, mais aussi de forteresse inexpugnable ou d’héroïne nationale que l’on évoque ici. Après avoir abordé dans le n o 61 des Cahiers les attaques anglaises de 1628-1629, de 1690 et de 1711, la réflexion se porte ici sur le siège de Québec en 1759, qui marqua la fin de la Nouvelle-France. Sont convoquées une dizaine de chroniques, pour l’intérêt qu’elles offrent au plan de la représentation de Québec et pour les témoignages qu’elles recèlent sur le comportement des Canadiens « ordinaires », aussi bien que des officiers canadiens de la milice, des bourgeois et des autorités de la colonie. On y voit comment ces relations de 1759 tissent un argumentaire autour de la perte, du sacrifice et du châtiment subi par la colonie, mais aussi comment ces discours autoriseront par la suite une double lecture de la conquête : à la fois défaite et (re)départ.
