Dans le cadre de notre recherche doctorale visant à mettre au jour le savoir-faire d’archivistes qui indexent des fonds d’archives par thématique, nous étudions l’indexation par sujet des archives selon les perspectives des créateurs de points d’accès, les archivistes. Le contenu et la qualité des index sont le fruit du travail de l’archiviste. Le but de cet article est de présenter la spécificité de l’indexation par sujet en archivistique. Pour ce faire, nous dégageons de la littérature les caractéristiques de l’indexation par sujet en archivistique et en bibliothéconomie. Nous considérons des ressemblances et des différences relatives à l’objet de l’indexation, aux principes organisationnels et aux techniques de description dans les deux disciplines. Il s’agit notamment de savoir si les archivistes peuvent reprendre telles quelles les lignes directrices pour l’indexation produites dans une perspective documentaire.
