Abstract
Selon le recensement de 1986, l'anglais maintient sa place comme première langue d'assimilation des Montréalais d'une autre langue que l'anglais ou le français. Cette constance recouvre toutefois des mouvements divergents. Si les allophones nés à Montréal s'anglicisent nettement plus qu'en 1971, le français progresse d'autant parmi les immigrés : il y a cependant un léger regain de l'anglais chez les derniers arrivés. Le progrès de la francisation paraît lié surtout au développement de l'immigration créole, espagnole, arabe et vietnamienne. La scolarisation en français semble aussi orienter assez fermement les enfants des nouveaux immigrants vers la francisation. Depuis la conjoncture socio-politique de 1976-1980, particulièrement favorable au français, le regain de l'anglais paraît traduire le retour à un certain Québec bilingue. L'attrait de l'anglais semble également s'accroître avec la durée de séjour à Montréal.
