I read with interest the article by (Simonson et al. 2014) about the oxygen dissociation curve of Tibetans and Chinese at 4200 m altitude who have slightly lower P50 [P50 is the partial pressure of oxygen (O2) at which hemoglobin is 50% saturated] than sea-level residents. I expected to see these findings compared with those of our own recent study (Balaban et al. 2013), which was the first to assess the in vivo O2 dissociation curve of sea-level and altitude residents and also reported that, in contrast to findings from in vitro studies, there was a pH-related reduction in P50 in subjects at altitude compared with sea-level subjects. However, the authors did not refer to our article; neither did the associated commentary (Naeije, 2014). We find it inexplicable that prior work very relevant to these experiments was not discussed and compared. Moreover, that this omission was missed by expert reviewers and editors is troubling.
