Abstract
Si le scientisme dont témoignent les écrits théoriques des initiateurs du courant spectral ne surprend guère dans le contexte qui a vu naître ces écrits, il maintient dans l’ombre certaines des motivations fondamentales qui ont pu guider les compositeurs concernés, ou, pour le formuler en des termes kandinskiens, déterminer leur nécessité intérieure. Dans le cas de Gérard Grisey, les écrits qui relèvent de la sphère privée (lettres, extraits de journal intime) révèlent une facette de sa personnalité que le compositeur, par pudeur peut-être, préférait ne rendre visible qu’à ses proches. On y découvre une ferveur mystique accompagnée de doutes, d’angoisses mais aussi d’états de grâce, d’euphorie et de certitudes, notamment celle d’être investi d’un don de Dieu, et par conséquent d’une mission à laquelle il était inconcevable de se dérober. Cependant, le mysticisme de l’adolescent et du jeune adulte semble progressivement s’ouvrir à une spiritualité que l’auteur de cet article s’attache à présenter comme une « spiritualité de l’immanence ».
