Plusieurs travaux consacrés au capital social le définissent par sa fonction ou par les effets qui lui sont attribués. Le concept reçoit ainsi une multiplicité de définitions qui entraîne des limites sérieuses pour la recherche et pour l'intervention. L'examen présenté ici tend à montrer que les approches qui conçoivent le capital social comme une « ressource potentielle découlant de la participation à des réseaux sociaux » permettent de mieux préciser le concept et de mener des recherches empiriques plus systématiques. Mais quelles que soient les définitions retenues, deux sujets de controverse subsistent : existe-il un capital social « négatif », et à quelles conditions peut-on parler de capital social « individuel » et de capital social « collectif »?
