Abstract
Au cours du XXe siècle, Montréal a été l’une des grandes métropoles nord-américaines où s’est développée une culture yiddish. À la jonction de l’Ancien et du Nouveau monde, celle-ci a connu une effervescence particulière, qui s’est manifestée, entre autres, par l’émergence d’un nombre important d’écrivains et d'activistes politiques. Au coeur de ce courant sans précédent au Québec, la poétesse Ida Maze (1893-1962) a joué un rôle déterminant: en plus de réunir l’intelligentsia locale dans le salon qu’elle a tenu pendant plusieurs années, elle a offert d’importantes ressources aux immigrants est-européens nouvellement arrivés en Amérique. Le présent article examine l’engagement littéraire et communautaire de Maze, et met en relief le changement de paradigmes que son salon révèle face à la tradition des salons propre au monde juif européen.
