Abstract
Dans les années 1930, la critique accusait Jovette Bernier de faire l’apologie de la sensualité, notamment avec son premier roman, qui fit scandale, La chair décevante (1931). Dans la continuité de ces remarques, cet article se propose d’étudier le discours de la sensualité qui se déploie dans La chair décevante et le recueil de poésies qui suit le roman, Les masques déchirés (1932). Il semblerait que Jovette Bernier propose à la littérature canadienne-française d’alors une façon novatrice d’appréhender le personnage/sujet lyrique féminin. Ainsi, à travers les thèmes et les récurrences sémantiques qui s’y rattachent, on verra comment l’exaltation des sens subvertit les codes esthétiques et sociaux de l’époque.
