Cette analyse fait voir ce qu’on n’a jamais vu chez deux intellectuels québécois de l’après-guerre : la reconduction sur le mode de l’essai par Pierre Vadeboncoeur de la démarche du peintre, Paul-Émile Borduas, auteur du Refus global . À telle enseigne que Pierre Vadeboncoeur esquisse d’une façon remarquable la trajectoire intellectuelle qui va de 1948 à la Révolution tranquille. Cette trajectoire comprend une dimension fondamentale : le rapport radicalement nouveau au passé institué par le Refus global , suivi d’une thématisation par Pierre Vadeboncoeur de la quête d’une substitution au « Notre maître, le passé » et de la recherche d’un maître dans le présent.
