Abstract
This article aims at examining the major issues related to metropolitan government in Canada by local case study analysis. More precisely, focus is put on the larger metropolitan areas of the country, namely Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The three situations refer to extremely dynamic and complex metropolitan formations considering their socio-economic and institutional features. Each one of them has experienced, and is still going through, extensive transformations, which sometimes are traumatic, affecting their interdependencies and their external relationships. They have been chosen as exemplary and distinguished cases and represent experiences that in some way have suceeded in matters of metropolitan government and planning, thus enlightening the variety and the multiple aspects of what could be seen as the Canadian model on the subject.
