Abstract
Nous aimerions analyser les significations et la fonction esthétique des collections de livres présentées dans deux ouvrages contemporains de la fin du dix-neuvième siècle. Dans La Maison d’un artiste de Goncourt d’abord, parue en 1881 et où l’auteur décrit dans le détail sa maison d’Auteuil et les collections d’objets d’art et de livres qu’il y a regroupées. Ce livre se présente ainsi comme une oeuvre hybride au croisement du manuel de décoration d’intérieur, du catalogue de collectionneur et de l’histoire de l’art tout en restant un ouvrage à caractère autobiographique où le je de la narration et le je qui écrit se confondent. Dans le roman À rebours ensuite, publié en 1884, et où le personnage principal des Esseintes, un aristocrate fin de race qui abhorre la société de son époque, décide de se retirer dans une maison de Fontenay aux Roses.
