Abstract
AROUND 1900 THE ONLY KNOWN COPY of the first edition of an important sixteenth-century book was added to the collections of the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris. This was Les voyages avantureux du capitaine Martin de Hoyarsabal, habitant de Cubiburu. Contenant les reigles & enseignemens necessaires a la bonne & seure navigation [The Adventurous Voyages of Captain Martin de Hoyarsabal, Inhabitant of Cubiburu. Containing the Rules and Instructions Necessary for Good and Safe Navigation]. According to the title page it was published in 1579 in Bordeaux “From the press of Jean Chouin” (“De l’imprimerie de Iean Chouin”), although evidence indicates that this was a false typographic address and that it was actually published in La Rochelle (Figure 1). A notice on page 2 from the printer-publisher to the reader reads:
