La modernité paradoxale inscrite dans la culture matérielle d'une communauté de Roms hongrois

Abstract
The curtain is pervasive in the material culture of Roms living in Hetes, a neighbourhood in the Hungarian cityofOzd, whose economy had been based on the steel industry. This object proves to have multiple meanings, revealed by a socio-semiotic analysis of a body of narratives, observations and photogmphsfrom the neighbourhood, which has become an ethnic ghetto in the wake of systemic changes following the collapse of Communism. The analysis helps us understand how a community marginalized by the impacts of these changes on employment, education, health and housing has managed to establish the curtain as an almost transparent tool of cultural resistance. For Roms living in Hetes, the curtain is an ambivalent border between individuals and between individuals and the community, an indication of social status and of the changing relationship between the various elements of working-class and ethnic identity. Its many meanings can be esthetic, political and social. The study of this protean object reveals a community's experience with the paradox of modem life. Resume Le rideau est omnipresent dans la culture materielle des Roms de Hetes, un quartier de la ville d'Ozd, en Hongrie, dont l'economie reposait autrefois sur la siderurgie. Cet objet se revele porteur de significations multiples, que permet de degager l'analyse socio-semiotique d'un corpus constitue de recits de vie, de notes d'observations et de photographies prises dans ce quartier, devenu ghetto ethnique suite aux transformations systemiques post-communistes. L'analyse aide a comprendre comment une communaute marginalisee par les repercussions de ces transformations sur l'emploi, la scolarisation, la sante et le logement a pu mettre en œuvre l'element de resistance culturelle quasi transparent qu'est le rideau. Pour les Roms de Hetes, le rideau est une frontiere ambivalente entre les individus et entre les individus et la communaute, un marqueur de statut social et un indice de la relation changeante entre les divers elements d'identite ouvriere et ethnique. Il vehicule des significations esthetiques, politiques et sociales. L'examen de cet objet protei-forme devoile le paradoxe de la modernite que vit une communaute.
