El presente articulo presenta los resultados obtenidos en la investigacion realizada por el Instituto de Investigacion de la Facultad de Ingenieria Geologica, Minera Metalurgica y Geografica de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (IIGEO - UNMSM), en el distrito de Lacabamba en el proyecto «Adaptacion de un sistema de tratamiento de aguas residuales en la comunidad urbana de Lacabamba, Region Ancash, Peru; Usando tecnologias de humedales artificiales». Este proyecto fue seleccionado en el 2003, por el Programa Pequenos Fondos Competitivos para Investigacion del Secretariado de Manejo del Medio Ambiente para America Latina y Caribe, SEMA / EMS y del International Development Research Centre, IDRC de Canada. La Convocatoria 2003 del SEMA - IDRC se centro en el uso sustentable del agua en las areas urbanas. Este proyecto tuvo como objetivo implementar y evaluar el sistema integral de manejo de aguas residuales en la comunidad urbana de Lacabamba, mediante el uso del sistema de humedales artificiales para tratar las aguas y su reutilizacion en un biohuerto comunal, como una tecnologia innovadora para reducir, la contaminacion de las fuentes superficiales de agua; proteger la salud de los habitantes y evitar el deterioro del medio ambiente; asi como involucrar a la poblacion en su Plan de Desarrollo Sostenible al 2015 del distrito de Lacabamba y participe activamente en los programas de sensibilizacion y capacitacion del proyecto de Investigacion.
