Cette étude se propose d’exhumer et de mettre en lumière, dans le cadre des débats engagés à l’Académie de Berlin au XVIIIe siècle, un filon de la pensée qui allait culminer aux XIXe et XXe siècles dans l’hypothèse du relativisme linguistique et l’élaboration de la méthode comparative. Reconnaissant en Giambattista Vico un précurseur notoire et par le relais des travaux de Condillac, la question de l’origine du langage et de son influence sur le développement des cultures et des nations va servir d’amorce à une contestation très ferme de l’innéisme cartésien et du criticisme kantien chez Hamann et Herder. S’inscrivant dans la mouvance de l’Aufklärung, cette dissidence établira avec un luxe d’érudition et de sensibilité à l’endroit des cultures exogènes qu’il n’est désormais plus possible de faire l’économie de la composante langagière dans la gestation de la pensée et que cette donnée de portée ontologique engage une multiplicité de points de vue liés à l’enracinement respectif des divers terroirs culturels.
