Abstract
Afrontar adecuadamente una situacion de crisis sera garantia de la proteccion y conservacion del patrimonio documental. Los programas de documentos vitales identifican y protegen los documentos que contienen informacion esencial, la cual es necesaria para asegurar que una organizacion pueda continuar sus funciones y actividades fundamentales en caso de emergencia.Tanto los programas de documentos vitales como los de recuperacion de documentos afectados por desastres forman parte de los planes de emergencia y tienen un amplio desarrollo en los EEUU y Canada; tambien en Espana, la proteccion y conservacion del patrimonio documental va adquiriendo notabilidad como lo evidencian algunas publicaciones y cursos especificos destinados a los responsables de archivos y bibliotecas.
