Conflict(ing) Narratives: Representations of War in <i>The Battleground Project</i> and the Performative Potential of Audience

Abstract
In the ongoing debates revolving around Canada’s continuing mission in Afghanistan, museum representations engaging with conflict narratives are especially relevant. These exhibitions cannot be treated as apolitical representations, but, rather, need to be contextualized within dialogues of the politics of war. Using my own engagement with The Battleground Project (2008) at the Textile Museum of Canada in Toronto as an entry point, I chart the role and function of cultural institutions in legitimating and constituting dominant conflict narratives, and the performative potential of audiences in producing meanings that support, question, resist and subvert such narratives.
