Les temporalités des transitions vers la vie adulte, généralement envisagées comme une série de seuils successivement franchis, se complexifient et se désynchronisent. Ces seuils restent-ils alors pertinents ? Qu’est-ce qui fait devenir adulte ? À partir d’une enquête longitudinale par panel qui réinterroge tous les trois ans une soixantaine de jeunes, nous retraçons leurs parcours biographiques en leur demandant à chaque fois s’ils se considèrent comme des adultes ou pas, et pourquoi. Nous voyons évoluer dans le temps leurs représentations, en étudiant les façons dont elles sont reliées aux temporalités du cheminement. Cette transition paraît alors diverse, mitigée, assumée de fait ou repoussée toujours un peu plus loin; elle multiplie surtout les ambivalences et les dissociations. Les temporalités sociales et biographiques révèlent alors toute la complexité de leurs interactions.
