Abstract
This paper outlines the strategies TransLink used to address the immediate and growing accessibility challenges of the Metro Vancouver public transportation system and develop a plan to achieve universal accessibility. The Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia faces a rapidly aging population coupled with the growing social phenomenon - ‘aging in place’. Aging in place is the concept that seniors are more frequently choosing to live in their homes longer than previous generations. These factors provide many challenges to the ongoing efficient and effective provision of providing a public transportation service that meets, and exceeds, community livability expectations. This paper will discuss these complexities and outline TransLink’s objectives and proposed methods of addressing them.
