Les études en histoire urbaine traitant de la haine de la ville, des discours et des pratiques qui s’en inspirent, se multiplient depuis une dizaine d’années, mais ont eu peu d’échos au Québec. Pourtant, une étude des discours catholiques québécois traitant de la ville et du fait urbain durant l’entre-deux-guerres permet non seulement de faire ressortir leurs caractéristiques au moment où la majorité de la population de la province devient citadine, mais aussi d’identifier les traits qui les distinguent de ceux que l’on observe ailleurs dans le monde catholique au même moment. Il y a, d’une part, la centralité du cas montréalais, qui incarne à lui seul toutes les tares du monde urbain aux yeux des catholiques canadiens-français et, d’autre part, la façon dont l’urbanité est associée non seulement à l’irréligion, mais à l’Autre anglophone et protestant. Généralement hostiles, ces discours laissent tout de même transparaître de timides signes d’une volonté d’apprivoiser ou de s’approprier une certaine urbanité.
