Abstract
Nonostante il continuo ingresso, dal 1955 ad oggi, di milioni di stranieri, buona parte della societa e della classe politica tedesca ha continuato a negare, per oltre un trentennio, che la Germania fosse un paese di immigrazione, come ad esempio gli Stati Uniti o il Canada. Chiamati a sostenere lo sforzo di ricostruzione dell’economia tedesca a partire dalla meta degli anni ’50, i lavoratori stranieri, prevalentemente italiani, spagnoli, greci, turchi, marocchini, portoghesi, jugoslavi e tunisini, vennero denominati, non a caso, Gastarbeiter ovvero lavoratori ospiti dai quali ci si attendeva il ritorno in patria non appena le condizioni del mercato del lavoro non avessero piu richiesto la loro presenza.
