El contenido de las visiones de la beata María de Ajofrín (muere en 1489), narradas por su biógrafo/confesor Juan de Corrales a finales del siglo XV, e incorporadas a fines del siglo XVI por José de Sigüenza a su Historia de la Orden de San Jerónimo, valida el establecimiento de la Inquisición en defensa de la ortodoxia Católica. La defensa de la ortodoxia también es servida mediante la descripción de la relación entre la vida espiritual de la beata y los sacramentos de la confesión y la comunión. Esta relación refuerza el valor espiritual de estos sacramentos, y el concomitante papel central del sacerdote como administrador de los mismos, aun cuando el clero se vea necesitado de reformas.
