Sachsen versteht sich als Brücke zwischen Ost und West, was in zahlreichen Kooperationen mit anderen Ländern und Regionen zum Ausdruck kommt. Als die intensivste Form der Zusammenarbeit gelten dabei "interregionale Partnerschaften", deren Basis eine Gemeinsame Erklärung über Zusammenarbeit ist, die den politischen Willen beider Seiten zu einer Kooperation auf verschiedenen Gebieten betont. Sachsen hat eine derartige Vereinbarung z. B. mit der kanadischen Provinz Alberta im Jahr 2002 abgeschlossen. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden die Provinz Alberta vorgestellt und die Beziehungen Sachsens mit Alberta näher untersucht.
